So… coming to this page, you were probably like, “Why on God’s green earth would I want to read about some chick’s ‘word of the day?’ What the heck does that have to do with me, and why am I going to waste my time by learning something I don’t give three craps, two flips, and a flying turd about?”
Hmm… well, let me start off by saying that this blog isn’t what it seems. It is… “a diamond in the rough…” (ooh!!! Movie Quote!)
The reason why I started this blog was because I realized that my vocabulary was somewhat… lacking. I mean, when you claim to be a writer, and you get struck with that moment of pure genius where the dialogue is flowing, the descriptions are mind blowing, and the plot is thickening with sinister deceptions, it seems like the planets, stars, and the very Heavens themselves are in perfect alignment… and then you get stuck! Because you began to write a sentence that was going to be witty for it’s lexical complexity… and you can’t think of the right word! And because you can never think of the right word to fit the perfect situation, that means that you have a bit of a problem. So I thought to myself, ‘Shae? You should start your own personal dictionary.’
And I did. If I heard a new word, I wrote it down in my handy dandy notebook, wrote what I thought it meant, then actually dragged my butt to a dictionary to write down the denotative meaning. Then I came to a rather stimulating conclusion:
I am NOT the next freaking Merriam Webster. Why am I writing down these words? It’s not like I go back and actually study them!
At the same time, I was getting into a rut with my writing. I wanted to write, I just didn’t have either the motivation or the creative juices to do so. So my big sister, who is also a writer, suggested I start blogging. “You’re so good at journaling, you should try it! It’s a good way to get yourself out there…”
I thought, ‘Hey, what do I have to lose?’
Then I got the brilliant beyond brilliant idea. I mean it! I was a total genius. (Another Movie Quote!) Why not write a blog about a word I learned and for the context, write a story about it, either true or fiction? And that is how I decided to combine my two needs into one.
So that’s essentially how this blog works. I find/hear/learn a word, give the definition, then tell the circumstance or situation that caused me to encounter such a word. Hopefully, this helps me with my vocabulary. If not…
It’s gonna be a whole lot of fun anyway.
